Our Team Completes Level 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training

We are pleased to announce that some members of our Care & Carers team have successfully completed the Level 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism. This accomplishment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to delivering safe, person-centred, and fully informed care for the individuals we support.

The Oliver McGowan training was established in response to the tragic passing of Oliver McGowan, whose story highlighted the urgent need for improved understanding and reasonable adjustments for individuals with autism and learning disabilities. Level 2 of this training is tailored for staff who provide direct care, and it requires a full day of comprehensive,in-person learning.

What the Team Learned

  • During the session, our team focused on key areas that are essential for providing high-quality, compassionate support, including:
  • Understanding the lived experiences of autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities.
  • Recognising and preventing diagnostic overshadowing.
  • Making reasonable adjustments in communication, environment, and support.
  • Applying relevant legislation, such as the Equality Act 2010 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
  • Working in a person-centred manner that honours rights, preferences, and individuality.

Why This Matters

At Care & Carers, we are dedicated to ensuring that every individual we support feels respected, understood, and empowered. Programs like the Oliver McGowan training strengthen this commitment by equipping our staff with the knowledge and confidence to deliver care that genuinely meets people’s needs.

By completing Level 2 of this training, our team is now even better prepared to:

· Communicate effectively using personalised approaches

· Advocate for reasonable adjustments

· Collaborate with families and other professionals

· Provide support that recognises each individual’s unique abilities, challenges, and aspirations

What’s Next

This training is not just a one-time accomplishment; it serves as a foundation that we will continue to build upon. In the coming months, more team members will participate in the training to ensure that best practices are embedded throughout the entire service. We will also incorporate this learning into our internal processes, reflective practices, and ongoing professional development.

We are proud of our team for their dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm for continuous learning. Achievements in training like this directly contribute to the high-quality, compassionate care we strive to provide each day.
